Feeding in Action was established in 1994 as a programme to help poor and vulnerable people in the Stellenbosch area meet their most basic need; to have sufficient and nutritious food. Our founder, Dr Dora Steyn, saw the great need for food in the community and ‘Stellenbosch Feeding in Action’ started in 1994 as a single feeding point reaching out to the poor in Central Stellenbosch. In keeping with this vision, Feeding in Action has grown over the last 20 years to an organisation that serves;
12 000 meals and distributes 1000 food parcels to almost 5000 people each week!
Our aim is to provide nutritious and satisfying food to anyone who is hungry, whether they are struggling households or people who are homeless, sick or vulnerable. We believe that no hungry person should ever be turned away. We are especially focused on feeding vulnerable children who need sufficient food and nutrition to grow and stay healthy by providing meals at schools, crèches and aftercare centres in the Stellenbosch area.
Meals and food parcels are distributed through 55 feeding points which are run by our amazing group of 300 volunteers who are involved in preparing and cooking food, transporting supplies to feeding points, and serving meals to thousands of people.
In order to make our programme ever more sustainable, Feeding in Action has recently begun to grow and harvest our own food supplies. Our garden will enable us to drive down costs and increase our supply base, allow us to feed more people on a regular basis.
We at Feeding in Action believe that we can only succeed in helping vulnerable if we work together with other organisations that support our mission. Over 25 organisations are assisted by Feeding in Action with food and supplies, including Stellenbosch Municipality Disaster Management, Youth Outreach and the Stellenbosch Night Shelter. We also support outreach programmes and upliftment projects to the young people during school holidays. Through our network of organisations, we are able to reach even more young people in need every year.
